Ask The Dentist: Volume 1

Welcome to the first installment of “Ask The Dentist”, Natural Smiles Ask The Dentist 1where we discuss canker sores, a common and often misunderstood mouth sore caused for various reasons.

Q. What causes canker sores and how do I get rid of them?

A. Canker sores are painful, irritating and annoying as I’ve experienced them first hand. What causes canker sores? The typically occur when your immune system is running low due to lack of sleep, poor diet or extreme stress. Other causes of canker sores include extreme exposure to the sun, excessive alcohol consumption, SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), a chemical found in household cleaners, shampoos, and various cosmetic products. Additionally, canker sores can be caused by sharp edges on teeth, braces, mouth guards, and dentures.

To prevent canker sores, try to get a solid seven to nine hours of sleep every, eat well and take nutritional supplements, particularly B vitamins. If you notice canker sores arising after sun exposure, alcohol consumption or contact with SLS, discontinue these activities and take precautions such as wearing sun protective clothing, drinking a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage and choosing products that are SLS free. If you feel your canker sores are caused by poorly fitting dental applications or sharp surfaces in your mouth, come see us right away to fix the problem.
